U.S. Navy Seals twice received a standing order from President Barack Obama authorizing them to take out the pirates who held an American captain in a standoff on the high seas, according to Pentagon officials and White House aides.
Over the course of the five-day standoff, Obama, who said little publicly about the hostage situation, received more than a dozen briefings and gave the Department of Defense policy guidance and the authority to use force if the situation compelled it.
Navy Seals aboard the USS Bainbridge shot and killed three of the pirates, who reportedly had AK-47s aimed at the back of Richard Phillips, who'd made an unsuccessful escape attempt Friday night. One pirate—reportedly a 16-year old—turned himself in and is cooperating with authorities and could face criminal charges.
